Scam 1992: The twisted rags to riches story is a winner
The rags to riches stories always make for a good watch as the story is about the protagonist rising from bottom to the top overcoming challenges which doesn’t happen in real life. The climb is cinematical and that’s the main reason they sell very well and are a safe bet despite being a cliche. Scam 1992 can also be considered as a rags to riches story but with a twist.
Usually, the hero in the rags to riches story would be a good guy but the lead in scam 1992 isn’t a good one but a grayish kind of character and that makes the story more interesting. Starring as Harshad Mehta, Pratik Gandhi was excellent in bringing life to the character. As said before, in the story he’s portrayed as neither good nor bad. The gray characterisation works well as the audience swinging from one side to the other. In certain scenes, we want him to fight back while in certain scenes we want him to fall down. Shreya Dhanwanthary as the journalist Sucheta Dalal played her part to perfection effortlessly. Other characters did their job well as there isn’t much things to complaint about. The much hyped title BGM didn’t impress me and it felt very much normal. Though, the BGM throughout the series was at appreciable level.
Based on the true story, the series contained a lot of financial terms and events that required a lot of assistance from Google to stay intact with the happenings. The entire story happens in 90’s Mumbai and I really loved the environment, office culture and the dressing which had no shortcomings. The emotions worked really well and it was the major positive for the series that kept me invested in the series. Speaking of emotions, there was a moral dilemma in me towards the end as I found myself feeling sorry for one of the biggest scammer that India has ever seen. Regardless, the story brings light to one of the important event and the tale has been told in an interesting way thus making it a good and informative watch.
Among the Indian webseries, Mirzapur and Paatal Lok is rated high among the audience. Scam 1992 will surely join the list as another well made Indian series.
Comprising of 10 episodes, the series is currently streaming in SonyLiv.
