Oppenheimer (2023)
Oppenheimer has been watched. Oppenheimer is a cinematic marvel for what it has achieved both commercially and critically which is no small feat. It culminates the finest actors in Hollywood shepherded by Nolan in producing one of the best movies this decades will ever see.
Christopher Nolan is one of the greatest directors Hollywood has ever seen. However, he gets a polarising response for the intellectual show off in his movies, a group adores him for it while a group finds it annoying. With Oppenheimer, Nolan has found a mid line between the two where he still shows off his intellect while as well being comprehendible for anyone who watches the film.
Oppenheimer as the title suggests is a rough biography of the physicist Robert J Oppenheimer( who built the atomic bomb that was launched on Hiroshima and Nagasakiwhile) outlining the World War 2 politics and defense war between the countries in the best way possible. Cillian Murphy as Robert J Oppenheimer has given a lifetime of performance. It's easy and has become usual to tag some performance as lifetime performance but what Cillian Murphy has done in Oppenheimer is a real wonder. A slight miss and we would have been seeing Thomas Shelby strutting in New Mexico.
Two actors gain the most attention after Cillian Murphy and both shall be fighting toe to toe for the supporting actor award next year, it's Robert Downey Jr. and Matt Damon. It was fresh to see Robert Downey Jr. in a restrained yet meaty role where he has ample scope to express and he doesn't switch suits and fight villains as and when he wishes. Matt Damon was a surprise for me as I had totally forgotten his presence until he appeared on the screen who has given an earnest performance as General Grooves. Emily Blunt as Katherine "Kitty" Oppenheimer was a perfect casting of the role as I found myself wondering what her real name was for it's entirety. Rami Malek in small but effective role makes his presence felt.
Oppenheimer is a unique film as it succeeds in providing an intense movie purely relying on drama and dialogues. Speaking of the dialogues, they are simple yet effective. The drama that proceeds in the second and final hour is fierce and unrelenting that it draws us into the film as closely as it can get. It makes us feel the horrors of a war via the consciousness of Oppenheimer without showing a single war visual.
The technical aspects of the movie are splendid that enrich the viewing experience to the maximum. The music by Ludwig Groansson aids in propelling the tension while the cinematography assists in capturing the 1945 New Mexico landscape perfectly. It's surreal and unbelievable to view how Nolan pulled off the blast scene without any CG, had me amazed for a few moments there.
