Manjummel Boys (2024)

Survival thriller is a tricky genre to handle. The structure of the movie is known and we can foresee how the plot is going to go. Manjumeel Boys was no different yet it wins us over despite all the hurdles and makes our eyes swell at the end.

Mollywood loves to play with the simplest of stories and build an absorbing movie around it. Manjumeel Boys is of the same type that has built a great movie with a simple plot.

I am going to be blatantly honest and say the plot and screenplay are not the strongest points of the movie. They are good and the narration is engaging but the performances, the characters and the technicalities are the major aspects that make the movie what it is now.

The movie follows a friends gang who are on a trip to Kodaikanal. If you take the characters in it, almost each and every character in it is relatable. A guy who is concerned about his shirt being neat, an elder guy who plans and organizes stuff and a notorious guy who does silly things. Such relatable characters suck us into the movie right away. The portrayal of the characters as well is earnest that nobody looks out of place.

The music by Susin Shyam is a backbone to the movie. The score is largely in the background, they are not pulsating yet the BGM aids in elevating the tension. The camera work is stupendous with its intricate angles that one can only wonder how they managed to capture such shots. The cinematography is compelling that the audience can feel the shiver down the spine.

On the downside, the movie is predictable. But that's the case with almost all the movies of this genre. Another major shortcoming of this movie is this deserves to be watched in a packed theatre in the big screens, the OTT watch will dilute the experience and I am sure the "overrated" calls for the movie after the release.

P.S.: I got to know a lot of things about the movie which kind of diluted my experiences. Try to skip all of them and watch it afresh..
