Dune 2(2024)
I had my reservations over Dune 1 before I watched. I feared the visuals were so exotic that they might put me to sleep. I watched it a couple of weeks back and I was wrong about it. Dune 1 was a terrific flick that laid the perfect basement for a humongous universe. Dune 2 continues from where it left and provides an epic science fiction drama that makes for one amazing theatre experience in IMAX, one not to be missed.
The story of the Dune 2 is on the familiar lines. It follows the journey of "the chosen one" in a pursuit to avenge his family and liberate the freman. The familiar story has been structured into an engaging screenplay that sucks you into the movie like a sandworm.
The movie is an intense affair, for the way the drama and certain sequences are carried out. Timothee Chalamet as Paul Atreides is a lifetime of a performance. He has played the role to perfection with a focus and motivation. From being agnostic over the faith initially to the final transition after the acceptance of the prophecy, a very well written and portrayed character. The charisma of the character was felt.
Zendaya as Chani travels throughout the movie unlike the first part and this movie is another testimony to her acting ability. Rebecca Ferguson, Dave Bautista, Javier Bardem and Josh Brolin in the important supporting roles were splendid. Austin Butler as the "Villain" Feyd Rutha had a stupendous character introduction.
The biggest and my favourite aspect about the movie that made me like it is the captivating storytelling. There are multiple subplots happening at the same time and each of them is interesting enough and the way they culminate in the climax was marvelous.
The movie didn't bore me nor did I have any urge to check my phone or watch. It was effectively a journey and we get into the immersive deserts along with the characters. Truth to be told, a little part of me hoped the movie ran for some more time, I wanted to see more of Lisan-Al-Gaib. The subtle humour present in the movie over the faith of the people was a fine relaxation at adequate intervals.
The technical aspects of the movie were too good, just like the first part. The score of Hans Zimmer had the flavour of desert mixed with a certain eeriness. The camera work was great with almost equal number of close up and wide shots to feel the grandeur and the intensity. The cinematography was splendid in capturing different landscapes of the movie.
On the shortcomings, the villain character was handled poorly. Austin Butler after the type of introduction, the character hardly did anything noteworthy and the scope as well is exhausted at the end of the movie thus killing the possibility of anything in the future.
