GOAT has been watched. A middling action crime thriller that is so formulaic making a tiring watch.
A couple of thoughts as I sat for the movie were isnโt it ironic to make Premji read the drinking advisory card and isnโt Vijay stupid to retire from cinema when heโs at the peak of his prowess. I am Ajith fan and I envy Vijay for his peak. He looks as dashing as any 40+ can look. He dances so well and he can make the audience laugh with ease. Unfortunately, GOAT is a mixed bag of outing for Vijay. While he excels in his stronger regions, he struggles real bad in uncharted territories of maniacal acting and is even laughable. Despite that, Vijay shoulders the movie with his screen presence and humour quotient, unfortunately it just wasnโt enough.
Venkat Prabhu has been one of the unique directors in the movie who can make enjoyable yet innovative movies, even his not so profitable movies like Goa and Saroja are still entertaining. GOAT unfortunately is not a unique attempt from Venkat Prabhu. He has got a core plot and the setup is done so well but he doesn't seem to know how to finish the movie, basically the second half. The movie falters a lot after the "surprise" interval reveal. The supposed cat and mouse game which should have been an edge of the seat affair is a draining sequence that the climax can't come soon enough.
Among the co-actors, I loved Sneha a lot. She had an amazing chemistry with Vijay and was convincing enough to be the lead heroine in the movie. Prashant and Prabhu Deva are not just another two actors to praise the hero but had proper usage in the movie which though is basic, it was laudable. Among the VP gang, Vaibhav seems to be the most favourite of the director as he gets a good role to play and he does a satisfactory job. Mic Mohan becomes another unintentionally stupid villain in the Kollywood industry.
Yuvan was good in parts in the background scores. There was some really great work in the first half but just as the movie derailed in the second half, Yuvan went missing. The movie's grandeur was visible in the movie with rich frames and locations, kudos to the technical team.
On the downside, the movie has umpteen logical mistakes that aren't easily avoidable. Even if one overlooks the mistakes, the screenplay isn't effective enough to hold your attention nor are the performances good. The movie is diluted with a number of nostalgia and references that the entire film feels a mashup of such moments and nothing memorable nor original to take away from.

P.S.:Come back stronger, VP. There's still hope!
P.P.S.: A special mention to the cameo in the climax that was lit af, proper passing of the baton. Theatre erupted!
Last P.S.: Isn't it funny and ironic that a movie as mid as this is named as GOAT.
