Mandela was one of the good movies of 2021 that deservedly got the national award. Ever since the announcement of the Maaveeran, Maaveeran was one of the movies to look forward to this year 'cause a lot of directors have failed to continue their debut form in the sophomore works and the combination of new gen director joining with the entertainer like SK is head-turner itself.
Maaveeran and Madonne Ashwin deliver very well in presenting a solid commercial movie that packs everything expected by the audience. The movie as revealed is about a comic artist who hears a voice and the what, why and how forms the movie.
SK as Sathya is in his best form as the hero and as well the actor. He holds the screen very well and performance is as believable as it can get. Yogi Babu as the sidekick comedian is the next major positive of the movie who lands pitch perfect timing comedy that leaves the audience in splits. Madonne Ashwin is one of the few directors who uses Yogi Babu well. Albeit being the entertainer that SK is, he comes with a package of cringe to satiate the family audience which becomes unbearable(like in Don) in certain movies, Maaveeran is sans any cringe and completely filled with entertainment alone. The first half of the movie is one of my most enjoyed first halfs in the recent past. Myshkin, Saritha, Sunil were the supporting cast who were apt for their roles.
Madonne Ashwin shows his mettle in the writing and direction of the movie. The movie moves in a predictable flow but still you are hooked to the screen as the scenes are very well directed. Some complaints of the movie was that the movie lags in the second half but I deny the fact, the second half is the soul of the movie and that's done pretty splendidly.
Technically, the movie is mostly alright. Bharath Shankar's work was on and off. The songs were very much meh but loved his background score in certain scenes. By the little I know about the technical aspects like the camera, cinematography and other aspects, they seemed mostly alright which didn't hinder the experience.
On the downside, the climax was abrupt and poorly done. Definitely it could have been improved or modified. The predictability is another shortcoming as the movie hardly packs any surprise.
Albeit, the movie is worth a watch in the theatre. Solid mass commerical flick!
