Jacob hurrying for his exams was running towards the bus with a sense of panic. He didn't have any motivation to go to school. Life seemed bitter and meaningless but he kept going hoping something eventual would happen. It's just 20 minutes travel to the school and he had planned to revise for the exam in the bus. He spent last night watching football which he regretted badly, his team had lost and he hasn't studied anything As he managed to get into the bus, he noticed a new face amongst the familiar ones. It was fresh. The face brought upon a calming feel in him. He stopped panicking. He was puzzled although to know who she is. She was also wearing a uniform but not the one that he was wearing. With umpteen questions in his mind, he skimmed through the book looking for answers which obviously was not there. He couldn't concentrate on studying as the girl had occupied his mind.
The bus reached the school and he dropped off the bus. He followed the girl behind. The exam fear had vanished completely. The girl noticed him following. She had glanced at him on the bus a couple of times. She looked a bit worried. She was new to the school and didn't know anybody here. She was sweating profusely. As they were about to enter the corridor, she fainted down the ground. The students around hardly noticed. He ran towards her and woke her up. She was embarassed. She didn't know what to do. She asked him in the lowest yet sweetest of voices he had heard ever "Do you know where to find Mr. Rutherford?". He replied "Yea, he'll be upstairs on the first floor. Are you alright?". She said "Yea, I'm fine. This is just nerves". He passed her the bag that felt almost empty. She slowly woke up and started walking towards the stairs.
He kept looking at her as she walked away. She had intriguing eyes that hadn't slept properly. The nose was small and she had minor freckles on her cheeks. The lips were dry and she had a scarf around her neck. Jacob had seen plenty of girls in his life so far, yet she was unique. He noticed her fingers that were long and sharp with nails uncut. The bag was hanging on the left side of her lean shoulders. He kept looking at her as she went up.
The bell rang to bring him back to senses. He was weirdly confident of the exams. He rarely paid attention to the lectures and barely scrapped the top of the portion. But he felt he would pass the exam. The question paper was moderately tough but he kept grinning and was reminded by the incidents in the bus. He wrote a lot of things in the answer sheet. He didn't if they were right or wrong but he wrote. He finished the exam before 30 minutes and left the hall.
The corridor was empty and to his surprise he noticed her coming down. His face brightened. She noticed and smiled at him. She came towards him and said "Thanks. I am new here and I was a bit scared today". He replied "It's alright. It's nothing.". They walked together till the gate. They didn't say anything. Jacob kept grinning. She was silent yet was calm unlike the morning. As they reached the gate, she said "I'm a new join. Mr. Rutherford is my class teacher.". He replied "Oh, wow. I too belong to Mr. Rutherford's class. I'm Jacob by the way". She replied "I'm Maria.". They got on the same bus and even found a seat to sit together.
Jacob failed the exams but he found a meaning to come to school.
