Amaran has been watched. The movie shines as a proper biopic that narrates the tale of a soldier as is without any needless jingoism nor any Indian army glorification.
Rajkumar Periyasamy impressed with his maiden venture Rangoon. With Amaran, Rajkumar Periyasamy proves his finesse in presenting a biopic that's as good as it can get.
I have never been a fan of army movies for their exaggeration of patriotism and the Indian army. Amaran stands out with an honest depiction that does justice to the character without going overboard while presenting a solid film. The movie could have easily become a documentary given the structure but Rajkumar Periyasamy succeeds with a staging and screenplay that makes it an engaging movie.
Sivakarthikeyan is at a crucial juncture in his career. Just a step away from entering the tier 1 status. Amaran provides the perfect launch pad, be it commercially or performance wise. He fits the role of the Major Mukund Varadarajan aptly and looks dapper in whatever getup he appears in, be it army cut, full shave or fully bearded. The dedication behind the screen in developing the physique is visible as thereโs not a single shot where one would feel him to be out of place. A particular shot in the airport where he bids goodbye to his family hiding his pain showed how much he has matured as an actor over the years.
While it's SK's Amaran, Sai Pallavi is the soul of the movie. A rocking performance from the actress as a live wire lover girl in the first half while as a matured wife in the second half. Tamil cinema failed to utilise the actress in her properly(barring Gargi) and Amaran does it best. Superb performance. The biggest win of the movie was the love and family portions that felt so full of heart. The imminent climax made these sweet moments much sweeter.
Technically, the movie is outstanding. The staging of action sequences are amazing while the movie covers the Kashmir landscape so beautifully. GV Prakash has done justice to his talent with a killer score and soulful songs.
On the downside, having known the climax, the movie gets a bit tiring in the second half waiting for the occasion. The movie initially feels more of an anecdotal record than a feature film and it takes time to switch.
